Uppsala University

The Department of Theology, Uppsala University, invites scholars to apply for a postdoctoral position in philosophy of religion.

Post doc position in philosophy of religion at the Department of Theology, two years.

Nature of Duties: The position primarily research, but some administration might be included.

The title of the post doc project is: The Crisis of Truth: the Postmodern-Relativist Challenge to Science and Religion. The objective is to understand how relativism came to be such a pervasive feature of the contemporary world, to identify how scientists as well as religious believers have responded to it, to critically assess relativism, and to distinguish what some of its political, scientific and religious implications are.

This position is a part of Uppsala University’s special initiative related to the Quality and Renewal 2007 Evaluation and will also be a part of the research programs "The Impact of Religion: Challenges for Society, Law and Democracy" and "Religion and Contemporary Science."

The candidate is expected to be able to work independently and drive the project forwards, actively participate in the seminaries and workshops arranged in the discipline or within the research program as a whole, conduct his or her research at the department and be present there on a regular basis, and present his or her research in that context as well as on the international arena.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the position the applicant must have a doctorate in philosophy of religion or in a closely related research discipline or have corresponding scientific qualifications of relevance to the research project, at the most five years before the deadline of the application have finished his or her doctorate and not earlier been employed as a post doc scholar elsewhere.

The ability to communicate successfully in English is a requirement.

Ranking criteria: In ranking the merits of eligible candidates, importance will be given to research skills and publications of relevance to the project as well as to the project outline (no more than 5 pages) which will state what kind of research that will be conducted within the framework of the post doc.

Application: The application shall consist of the following documents in three copies:

  • A Curriculum Vitae consisting of the applicants scientific merits, including transcript of the doctoral degree or equivalent diploma. The merits should include affirmed certificates and judgments of quality from scholars, director of studies or similar persons.
  • A short presentation of the applicant’s scientific activities. The presentation should make it clear what research and results the applicant consider to be his or her most important merits.
  • List of scientific works. The applicant should among these works mark the 10 most important ones.
  • Submit the most important scientific works (at the most 10 publications) the applicant has written, in the order they are numbered in the list of scientific works.
  • An outline of the research that is intended to be carried out within the framework of the post doc position (at the most 5 pages).
  • The recruiting committee may consider employing interviews, trial lectures and contact referees. The applicant should therefore submit a list of persons of reference.

University of Oxford

The University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre and the Centre for Anthropology and Mind are accepting applications for research proposals in the area of Cognitive Science of Religion and Theology (£800,000 to award in total).  Applications are invited from scholars of any nationality post-Masters level or equivalent and beyond.  We seek proposals for focused, one- or two-year projects that address either the evidential needs of the cognitive science of religion or explore the philosophical and theological implications of assumptions and findings in the field.

An initial round of awards will be made in summer 2008.  We anticipate awarding approximately 15 grants in this first round (including all four two-year grants in summer 2008) between June 2008 and May 2009.
