Biography

Professor B. V. Subbarayappa was Honorary Professor, National Institute for Advanced Studies, Bangalore (INDIA). Earlier he was Executive Secretary, Indian National Science Academy, and Member-Secretary, National Commission for History of Science (1997-2001), New Delhi. As President (1997-2001) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science (Science Division) related to UNESCO, Prof. Subbarayappa caused a session on Science and Religion to be organized at the International Congress of History of Science held in Mexico (2001), and at Beijing (2005).

He was conferred the Honorary Degree by the University of Bologna and his acceptance speech was on Science, Religion and Humanism. He was a member of the Organizing Committee of an International Seminar on "Science and Beyond" held in Bangalore (Jan 2003) and funded by John Templeton Foundation. He is deeply interested in Science-Religion dialogue and has organized two meetings for students in Bangalore. He is now the President of the TRUST : Science and Spirituality Research in India. Prof. Subbarayappa is an elected Full Member of the International Academy of History of Science, Paris (1987); recipient of Copernicus Medal of the Polish Academy of Science (1973; on the occasion of the 500th birth anniversary of Copernicus). He is the editor/author of 21 books and he has published over 100 papers including papers on Science and Religion; and articles on History of Science in India, Science and Society.
