Biography

William B. Parsons (B.A. Brandeis University; M.Div Yale University; Ph.D University of Chicago) is the Harry and Hazel Chavanne Professor at Rice University. His publications include The Enigma of the Oceanic Feeling; Religion and Psychology: Mapping the Terrain; Teaching Mysticism; Freud and Religion: Advancing the Dialogue; Being Spiritual but Not Religious and dozens of essays in multiple journals and edited books. He has served as Chair of the Department of Religion at Rice University, Director of the Rice University Humanities Research Center, and has been a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) at Hebrew University. He has been the recipient of several teaching and service awards. During his over three decades at Rice he has also run the circumference of the Earth, for which is he is now paying dearly.
