Biography
Professor Celia Deane-Drummond is Director of the Laudato Si' Research Institute and Senior Research Fellow at Campion Hall, University of Oxford. She was previously full Professor in Theology at the University of Notre Dame, IN, USA from 2011-2018 and was the Director of the Center for Theology, Science and Human Flourishing at the University of Notre Dame, as well as Fellow of the John Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values; the Kroc Center for Peace Studies and the Eck Institute for Global Health. She holds an honours degree in natural science from Cambridge University, a doctorate in plant physiology, an honours degree in theology, and a second doctorate in systematic theology from Manchester University. Her research interests are in the engagement of theology and natural science, including specifically ecology, evolution, genetics, animal behaviour and anthropology. Her research has consistently sought to explore theological and ethical aspects of those relationships.
She was Professor in Theology and the Biosciences at the University of Chester from 2000-2011 and Director of the Center for Religion and the Biosciences at the University of Chester from 2002-2011. She has published widely including over thirty papers in internationally recognized scientific journals and over twenty books, either edited or as sole author.
She is joint editor of a new journal launched in 2014 with Mohr Siebeck (Germany) entitled Philosophy, Theology and the Sciences.
She was elected Chair of the European Forum for the Study of Religion and Environment in 2011 and her position will rotate in 2017.
