Biography
Lisa H. Sideris a professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University with research interests in environmental thought and ethics at the intersection of science and religion. She is author of Environmental Ethics, Ecological Theology, and Natural Selection (Columbia University Press, 2003) and co-editor of a collection of essays on the life and work of Rachel Carson, Rachel Carson: Legacy and Challenge (SUNY, 2008). Her recent work focuses on the role of wonder in environmental and science-religion discourse. She is particularly interested in efforts to recast scientific narratives of planetary and human history, including Anthropocene narratives, as shared, sacred stories for humanity. A critical appraisal of these scientific-spiritual narratives and their investment in problematic forms of wonder is the subject of her 2017 book Consecrating Science: Wonder, Knowledge, and the Natural World (University of California Press). Along with two colleagues, Sideris is currently co-PI of a major grant from the Luce Foundation on "Being Human," and serves as Associate Director of a new Center for Religion and the Human at Indiana University. Her current interests include the mythic, religious, and ethical dimensions of emerging technologies related to de-extinction and astrobiology, among other initiatives, and she is working on a book about the intersection of religion, technology, and environmentalism, tentatively titled Religion and World-Making.
