Biography
Alister McGrath was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1953. After specializing in mathematics and sciences at high school, he was awarded a scholarship to study Chemistry at Oxford University in 1971. After taking First Class Honours in Chemistry in 1975, with a specialization in quantum theory, he remained at Oxford for further research in molecular biophysics under the supervision of Professor George K. Radda FRS, gaining his DPhil in 1978. At the same time, he studied for the Oxford University Final Honour School of Theology, and was awarded First Class Honours in 1978. He then transferred to Cambridge University, to take up the Naden Studentship in Divinity at St John's College. He returned to Oxford in 1983, and was awarded a personal chair in theology in 1999.
In 2006, he moved to King's College London as Professor of Theology, Ministry and Education, and returned to Oxford in April 2014 as the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion. In addition to his doctorate in natural sciences, McGrath holds two further earned doctorates from Oxford University: the Doctor of Divinity degree, awarded in 2001 for work in historical and systematic theology, and the Doctor of Letters degree, awarded in 2013 for work in science and religion. He has delivered the Bampton Lectures at Oxford University, the Gifford Lectures at the University of Aberdeen, and the Hulsean Lectures at the University of Cambridge. He was elected as Gresham Professor of Divinity in the City of London for the period 2015-18. The responsibilities of this chair, founded in 1597, are to provide six public lectures in divinity annually in the City of London.
