Biography
Professor DeWitt is an environmental scientist in the Gaylord Nelson Insitute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he serves as a member of the graduate faculties of Environment & Resources, Water Resources Management, Conservation Biology & Sustainable Development, and Limnology and Marine Science. His appointment since 1972 has been "to address the fragmentation of the disciplines" through development of an integrative program of teaching, research, and service directed at ecological integrity and sustainability. This includes an integrative framing of science, ethics, and praxis in the development and application of solutions to environmental issues and problems.
Professor DeWitt designed and developed the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies as its Director and President from 1979 to 2005 as a service to 60 Christian colleges and universities across North America, with programs in south India and east Africa. He also is a Patron of the John Ray Initiative. He has given addresses at more than 100 North American colleges and universities and worldwide through travels to China, Korea, India, Malaysia, Russia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
He teaches Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin, guides 25-30 senior undergraduates annually as interns in environmental and conservation agencies, and supervises graduate students in wetlands science, environmental ethics, and conservation in Asia and Africa. His home is just south of Madison, Wisconsin in the Town of Dunn, where in the mid-1970s he served as Town Chair (Mayor) and helped bring his town to receive the Renew America Award in 1995 and 2000. In 2002 he worked with Sir John T. Houghton to engage 60 leading climate scientists and evangelicals in producing the Oxford Declaration on Climate Change, a statement that has been instrumental in bringing climate issues to the attention of evangelicals and the wider public. His theological lectures include the Abraham Kuyper Lecture at Fuller Theological Seminary, the Charles Haddn Spurgeon Lecture at Denver Seminary, and the Francis Schaeffer Lecture at Covenant Theological Seminary. His most recent book is Earthwise: A Guide to Hopeful Creation Care (3rd edition, Grand Rapids: Faith Alive Christian Resources), 2011.
