Biography
Karl E. Peters is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida, Coeditor of Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science, and Adjunct Professor of Science and Religion at Meadville Lombard Theological School. He also has taught at the University of Hartford and Hartford Theological Seminary. Peters earned a M.Div. from McCormick Theological Seminary in systematic theology and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in philosophy of religion, specializing in issues in religion and science. His dissertation on “The Concept of God and the Method of Science” reflects his ongoing interest in epistemology and ideas about God. He is working on developing an empirical, evolutionary, practical theology that focuses on human salvation in relation to contemporary problems of violence, consumerism, and environmental degradation. His most recent essays are “Spiritual Transformation and Healing in Light of an Evolutionary Theology” in Spiritual Transformation and Healing, ed. Joan D. Koss-Chioino and Philip Hefner (AltaMira Press, 2006), “Empirical Theology and a Naturalistic Christian Faith” in All That Is: a Naturalistic Christian Faith for the Twenty-First Century, Arthur Peacocke, edited by Philip Clayton (Fortress Press, 2007), “Towards an Evolutionary Christian Theology,” Zygon (March 2007), and “Understanding and Responding to Human Evil: a Multi-causal Approach,” Zygon (September 2008.)
He also is author of two books, Dancing with the Sacred: Evolution, Ecology, and God (Trinity Press International, 2002) and Spiritual Transformations: Science, Religion, and Human Becoming (Fortress Press, July 2008). The latter is based on his 2005 chapel talks at the annual conference of the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science (IRAS). Peters is a past-president of IRAS and currently is Vice President for Conferences. He also is President of the Center for Advanced Study in Religions and Science (CASIRAS).
