India in the Science–Religion Conversation: Plurality, Tension, Promise

In 2006, Elon University (USA) and the Interdisciplinary University of Paris collaborated on a project titled Global Perspectives on Science and Spirituality (GPSS), supported by the John Templeton Foundation. The initiative arose from a recognition that science–religion dialogue had been largely shaped by Euro-American questions and frameworks. Its aim was to broaden this conversation by bringing in intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual resources from other cultural worlds, especially South Asia. A few scholars from India participated in this project to examine how the Indian tradition conceptualises nature, mind, and ultimate reality, and how these might enter into constructive engagement with contemporary science. Research from India revolved around themes such as yogic consciousness, meditation and cognition, and classical Indian medical traditions like Ayurveda in relation to modern biology and health sciences.

The project was significant because it treated Indian traditions not merely as objects of study but as sources of conceptual insight for global discourse. In that sense, it marked an early and deliberate attempt to make the science–religion conversation genuinely cross-cultural, drawing on India’s philosophical and contemplative heritage as dialogue partners rather than peripheral voices.

Although GPSS was a seminal academic initiative, it did not inaugurate the relationship between science and religion in India so much as extend and rearticulate an already long-standing tradition of seeking conceptual harmony between empirical inquiry and spiritual–philosophical reflection. It added a contemporary, globally networked strand to a civilisational pattern in which scientific curiosity and religious or metaphysical questioning had often coexisted, interacted, and at times mutually informed one another. 

A Checkered yet Layered History

Historically, India offered a distinctive landscape for reflecting on the relationship between science and religion. Unlike the familiar “conflict narrative” often popularly told in parts of the Western world, the Indian context has historically been more layered, dialogical, and plural. Science and religion in India have interacted through cooperation, tension, reinterpretation, and mutual influence, shaped by civilisational depth, cultural diversity, and philosophical richness.

However, some historians note that pre-modern India did not always present a seamless harmony between scientific reasoning and scriptural authority. The case of Aryabhata, a renowned astronomer who followed typical scientific methods of observation and calculation (5th century CE), is often discussed in this regard. Aryabhata proposed, among other things, that the apparent daily motion of the heavens is due to the Earth’s rotation and offered mathematical accounts of eclipses without recourse to mythological explanations. These views were sitting uneasily alongside cosmological ideas found in Vedic and Puranic literature, including passages associated with the Atharva Veda. Later astronomers such as Varahamihira and Bhaskara II did not simply “correct” Aryabhata, but they often embedded astronomy within broader astrological and scripturally resonant frameworks. Scholars suggest that this reflected intellectual pluralism as well as social realities. Scientific research enjoyed royal patronage from figures who were also religious authorities, and any narrative that conflicted with religious traditions would have resulted in the loss of this patronage. Thus, rather than open conflict, India had a tendency to go for selective emphasis and synthesis. This indicates that tensions between empirical models and scriptural cosmologies did exist, even if they were managed through commentary and reinterpretation rather than direct confrontation (Plofker, 2009; Shukla & Sarma,1976; Rao1994). 

The colonial encounter significantly reshaped the science–religion dynamic in India where progress took the upper hand over the other-worldly liberation (Arnold, 2000). In independent India, scientific temper was even promoted as a civic virtue. Yet religion remained a powerful social and cultural force. Many Indians move easily between scientific and religious frameworks in daily life. There are top level Indian space scientists who perform special religious rituals for the success of the satellite mission.  For many, these are not perceived as contradictory but as addressing different dimensions of life: one concerned with how the world works, the other with the larger connectedness and belonging.

Between Growth and Strains: The Contemporary Landscape

The current engagement with science–religion dialogue in India is both complex and vibrant. Over roughly the past two decades, the field has grown through a wide network of conferences, seminars, and publications across the country. More than 300 academic gatherings have addressed science–religion themes in different regions of India, reflecting sustained and distributed interest rather than isolated efforts. 

This expanding conversation has yielded a substantial body of literature, including dozens of books and hundreds of scholarly articles in English as well as in several Indian languages, thereby widening access beyond a narrow academic elite. The journal Omega – Indian Journal of Science and Religion, now in its twenty-fifth year, has served as an important platform for disseminating research and reflective essays to universities, colleges, and seminaries nationwide. In addition, science–religion centres and initiatives networking in cities such as New Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Kochi have contributed to institutional visibility and continuity. Together, these efforts have helped move science–religion dialogue towards recognition as a modest but emerging academic specialisation, with some universities and autonomous colleges beginning to offer dedicated courses in the area. Most of the major seminaries in India today offer courses in science and religion as part of their philosophical or theological curriculum. 

However, a perceived limitation of science–religion dialogue in India is that much of it still operates within conceptual and epistemic frameworks largely shaped by Western scholarship. While these frameworks have been fruitful, they can also set the terms of debate in ways that leave Indian categories of thought underdeveloped on their own terms. Some popular contributions do little more than repeat or adapt Western discussions without sufficiently rethinking questions from within Indian intellectual traditions.

Another concern is the growing tendency among certain academic and public groups to place ancient Indian philosophical or mystical insights alongside modern scientific theories in an uncritical manner, sometimes asserting the historical or conceptual superiority of the former. This trend is often linked, at least in part, to the contemporary entanglement of religion, identity, and politics in India. In such contexts, ancient texts are occasionally presented as if they contained advanced scientific discoveries in a literal sense, and modern science is read back into metaphorical passages.

These moves may arise from understandable motives, but risk blurring important distinctions between mythic or metaphorical insight and empirically testable scientific knowledge. This negative trend, especially when reinforced by strong political alignments, does create real practical obstacles for rigorous scholarship in science–religion dialogue. In some cases, it fosters intellectual climates that are resistant to critical inquiry, where questioning dominant narratives or traditional claims is discouraged. 

A key challenge for the future of science–religion dialogue in India, therefore, is to value and interpret traditional knowledge with intellectual sympathy and rigour, without forcing it into categories or claims it did not originally seek to occupy. This requires both critical honesty and cultural sensitivity, allowing genuine dialogue rather than apologetic harmonisation.

Rethinking ‘Science-Religion’ for India

At the heart of the Indian experience lies deep plurality. India is home to Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, Islamic, Christian, and many indigenous traditions, each carrying distinctive cosmologies, views of the human person, and ways of knowing. For this reason, it is often more fitting in the Indian context to speak of science and spirituality or science and meaning rather than the more Western pairing of science and religion or science and theology. The latter terms presuppose institutional and doctrinal boundaries that do not always map neatly onto Indian realities. There is no single “Indian view” of the relationship between science and ultimate questions; rather, there are multiple strands shaped by region, language, and lineage. Even so, some broad patterns are visible.

Classical Indian thought did not sharply divide what today are labelled science, philosophy, and spirituality. These domains were often interwoven within larger quests for truth and liberation. Fields such as astronomy, mathematics, linguistics, logic, and medicine developed in close dialogue with metaphysical reflection and spiritual practice. Astronomers, for instance, produced careful calculations of planetary motion while situating the cosmos within frameworks of existential and ritual significance. Ayurveda united empirical observation with holistic understandings of body, mind, and environment. Knowledge, therefore, was not merely instrumental; it was frequently understood as a path towards harmony, self-realisation, and meaningful living. In this sense, the Indian intellectual heritage naturally lends itself to conversations about science in relation to spirituality and meaning, rather than to narrowly defined religious doctrine alone.

Complementing the Global Dialogue

The potential of a science–religion interface from an Indian point of view may be viewed as both epistemic and ontological. Many Indian philosophical schools developed sophisticated theories of knowledge (pramana). In some cases, they encouraged disciplined observation and argument. This intellectual culture created space where empirical and intuitive modes of knowing could coexist. Epistemically, some of the mathematical and consequent theoretical impasses in contemporary scientific research, when seen through the integral epistemic frameworks of India, may be recognised as natural corollaries of the inherent nature of reality itself. Much of the classical scientific debate between theism and atheism in the West may be interpreted as a consequence of a dualistic epistemology grounded in the binary categories of classical philosophy and logic. By contrast, invoking Indian epistemic tools and the ontological unity between God and world may render many such debates as largely logical exercises, if not partially obsolete, shaped by fragmented epistemologies rather than holistic insight.

Attempts at rapprochement between Western science and Indian mysticism by authors such as Fritjof Capra (1975) and Gary Zukav (1979) have faced serious criticism from thinkers such as Ken Wilber (1979) and Jeremy Bernstein (1978). While superficial correlations certainly deserve careful critique, the deeper scope for a substantive interface between Indian ontology and modern science remains far from fully explored. The epistemic and theoretical paradoxes in present-day physics, along with the expanding metaphysical horizons of contemporary cosmology, may receive richer philosophical interpretation, without compromising scientific integrity, if the epistemic and ontological categories of the diverse Indian philosophical traditions are more thoughtfully engaged.

The Ayurvedic system of Indian medicine with its conceptual grounding in metaphysical, cosmic, and internal harmony as the basis of health, show noteworthy analogical resonances with emerging holistic philosophies in modern medical discourse (Valiathan, 2013). The establishment of departments and research programmes in Ayurveda in several Western universities signals a constructive movement in this direction. Likewise, the primacy of consciousness and the centrality of the matter–spirit correlation in many Indian philosophical and religious traditions have some significant directions to offer to current debates on consciousness. 

Furthermore, the multi-level interpenetration models found in Indian metaphysics may offer fresh conceptual frameworks. These frameworks share analogical proximity with, yet also move beyond, the connections among non-sentient mass–energy configurations and the multidimensional spatio-temporal implications of theoretical physics, while mysticism speaks of layered interpenetration of reality at experiential and ontological levels.

Scholarly informed and methodologically rigorous dialogue between science and religion from an Indian perspective can therefore substantially enrich the global science–religion discourse. It represents not only an intellectual opportunity but also a shared challenge and imperative for both Western and Eastern science-religion theorists.
