Biography

Palmyre Oomen is Thomas More Professor em. of Philosophy at the Eindhoven University of Technology, and retired Senior Researcher Theology and Science, of the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies, of the Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
She studied mathematical biology (Leiden and Delft, 1975), theology (Nijmegen, 1988), and philosophy (Nijmegen, 1994), and received her Ph.D. at the University of Nijmegen in 1998. All these academic degrees were honored with cum laude. Her dissertation was on Whitehead's philosophy and its contribution to a theology of God's agency. The dissertation book was awarded with the Legatum Stolpianum Prize in 2001.
Her academic fields of interest: Philosophical theology (esp. the issue of divine agency in light of worldly autonomy and evil); Philosophy of nature and anthropology (esp. causality, self-organization, teleology, spontaneous order, evolution, freedom and determination, soul, embodiment); artificial and natural adaptive self-controlling systems; ‘Theology and Science’ with special attention to ‘self-organization of nature’ in relation to God’s agency, and neuroscientific and anthropological ideas about freedom and personhood.
