Biography
Christopher Southgate was born in 1953 in Exeter, England. He trained as a biochemist at Cambridge and went on to do post-doctoral work at North Carolina and Bath. From 1987-90 he was a lay candidate on an Anglican ordination course, and since then has worked as a chaplain in higher education and mental health, and is currently Vice-Principal and Dean of Studies for the South West Ministry Training Course.
Chris has taught the science-religion debate at Exeter since 1993, winning a Science and Religion Course Award in 1996. He is the editor of 'God, Humanity and the Cosmos' (T&T Clark, 1999, revised and expanded in 2005, and further expanded in 2011), the first full-length dedicated textbook in the field. His research areas include the problem of suffering in evolution, on which his 'The Good and the Groaning: evolution, suffering and the call of humanity' was published in June 2008 by Westminster John Knox Press; environmental theology; and the origin of life. Chris has published six collections of poetry, most recently 'Easing the Gravity Field: poems of science and love' (2006), 'A Gash in the Darkness' (2012), and 'Chasing the Raven' (2016).
