Biography

Gijsbert van den Brink is Professor of Theology & Science at the Faculty of Religion and Theology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His academic background is in systematic theology and analytical philosophy of religion. After having held teaching positions at the universities of Groningen, Utrecht and Leiden, he moved to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2008. He served as Head of Department of the FRT Department of Beliefs and Practices from 2017-2021. In 2010-2011 Van den Brink spent the academic year as John Witherspoon Fellow on Theology & Science at the Center of Theological Inquiry (CTI), Princeton NJ. In the Fall semester of 2021, he is Senior Resident Fellow at the Henry Center for Theological Understanding, Deerfield IL.

Van den Brink’s research is focused on the interface of Christian theology and the natural sciences, but he participates in wider debates at the interface of science and religion. After having finished a major project on Reformed theology and evolutionary theory (culminating in a monograph published with Eerdmans, 2020), he is now involved in two other projects, focusing on (1) the way in which contemporary global challenges like climate change should impact theological anthropology; (2) the nature and future of theology as an academic discipline.
