Biography
Bishop Richard Cheetham’s main focus is on the growing work on the relationship between science and religion. He is co-director for global engagement with Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science (ECLAS). He has been involved with the ECLAS project for over 12 years since its earliest days. He is a member of the Anglican Communion Science Commission (ACSC), and a trustee of Christians in Science.
He is also an Assistant Bishop in the Dioceses of Guildford and Southwark and part of the clergy team at St Martin’s Church, Dorking.
Bishop Cheetham has had a deep interest in the relationship between science and religion since his teenage years. His first degree was in physics and philosophy, graduating in 1977 from Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He then taught physics for five years, firstly at a comprehensive school in Yorkshire and then at Eton College, before working as an Investment Analyst at Legal and General in the City of London for two years.
He trained for ministry in the Church of England at Ripon College, Cuddesdon and was ordained in 1987. He has served as a curate at Holy Cross, Fenham in Newcastle Upon Tyne, a vicar at St Augustine of Canterbury, and as area dean in Luton, and an archdeacon in St Albans. During that time, he completed a PhD on a part-time basis at King’s College London looking at the understanding of religious belief in contemporary Britain, with particular reference to the concept of ‘truth’, as reflected in the practice of collective worship in a sample of Luton schools.
From 2002 – 22 he served as Bishop of Kingston in the Diocese of Southwark. During that time, he also led on the environment and inter-faith matters and chaired the Diocesan Board of Education for many years. He served on the Council of the University of Roehampton from 2006-12 and was a professorial fellow there. He is currently an Emeritus Fellow.
More widely he has served as co-chair of the national Christian Muslim Forum, President of St Paul’s Group YMCA, Patron of the Fircroft Trust, chair of the British Regional Committee and member of the Foundation of St George’s College Jerusalem, and a member of the Church of England’s national environment working group.
